Racing History
Following a common thread among racing drivers, Brett’s interest in automotive sports
began at an early age. His first race car was a 70’s era, locally purchased, Street
Stock Camaro. The newly purchased Camaro was promptly towed to the Magic Valley
Speedway. There Brett saw the track, and raced a car, for the first time. As a result
of a performance that surprised everyone involved, Brett was drawn into an exciting
new profession; that of a professional race car driver.
During the year, Thompson Motorsports
made five additional starts at the Magic Valley Speedway, competing in the Street
Stock Division. The following year, after multiple victories, Brett moved up to
the Grand American Modified Series. Achieving a very high percentage victories and
overall success in the next two years, it became obvious that it was time for yet
another challenge. It would come in the form of the NASCAR Grand National West Series
where, in his first race, Brett drove from a required last place start to a very
impressive 7th place finish.
Today, Brett is an 10th year professional race car driver competing in two of the
four NASCAR divisions: Camping World Grand National Cars and Craftsman Trucks.
Brett Thompson and the Thompson Motorsports Organization
are consistently on the cutting edge of technology. In the fall of 2005, NASCAR
announced that they would be allowing a new car and engine program for the NASCAR
Grand National Series. This program encouraged all racers within the division to
make a transition toward a NASCAR specification engine, and, to a new car body constructed
from advanced composite materials. Brett was the first NASCAR Grand National Series
driver to test the new NASCAR engine. He was invited to Lakeland, Florida in February
2006, where the new engine was being tested. Later in 2006, Thompson Motorsports
became the first team to both complete, and make use of, the new composite bodies.
